Check the Issue and Deadline

The ordinary deadline is generally 60 days after receipt. If the request is late, explain the circumstances and ask about good cause rather than assuming review is impossible.

Medical and nonmedical issues can use different request options. Choose the option that matches the decision you received.

Explain What Needs Review

List the points you believe are incorrect or incomplete. Include new providers, tests, hospital visits or changes in your condition, and identify evidence that was missing.

Keep the explanation factual. An appeal does not need unsupported claims about guaranteed approval rates or a specific representative’s influence.

Keep Following the Claim

Retain the submission confirmation and respond to SSA’s requests. Check that SSA has a current address and contact number.

If reconsideration is denied, read the new notice for the hearing request instructions. Reconsideration and a fresh application are different actions; ask about the implications before abandoning an appeal.

Separate Corrections from New Information

A correction explains something inaccurate in the original record, such as the wrong treatment dates. New information can include a later test, a new provider or a change in your condition. Label the difference clearly so the reviewer can understand why you are sending it. Explain where evidence can be obtained if you do not hold a copy. Continue to check messages and mail after filing because reconsideration may require additional information.
